Why do I love Birth Boot Camp?

Birth Boot Camp is based on the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative which lays out best evidence based practices for healthy mamas, healthy babies, and the best birth outcomes. Birth Boot Camp provides amazing support for instructors so that we can continually keep up on new research and the best information available. I believe strongly in the power of education and how it not only affects birth outcomes, but how it affects the way that families process their births after the fact.

In my own births, I desired peaceful, non-intervention births at home. However, due to circumstances that were out of my control, I was transferred to a hospital in both cases. While midwifery care outside of a hospital was my first choice, I am also grateful for the collaboration between my midwives and the hospitals that were able to provide me the care that I needed at that time. Instead of a curriculum that says "avoid XYZ at all costs", Birth Boot Camp provides the tools necessary for couples to make educated decisions based on their own pregnancy and birth circumstances. There is a time and place for everything.

My goal as your childbirth instructor is to educate you about your options and provide you with the information that you will need to make important decisions regarding your care. I believe that it is important to empower mothers to make informed choices about their care so that even if things do not go as planned, they are able to feel confident in the decisions that they make.

I also love that Birth Boot Camp doesn't stop at birth! The comprehensive course will give you vital information regarding your immediate postpartum period as well and we even offer a "Homecoming" workshop with even more information! Every comprehensive class comes with a comprehensive online breastfeeding course with an IBCLC which I believe is extremely valuable.

Please feel free to ask me any questions that you may have. I look forward to hearing from you!

"Birth Boot Camp childbirth education and doula programs are founded on some basic principles, spelled out in the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative. As we formulated our curriculum, we turned to this document to help guide us.

What is Mother-Friendly care as it specifically applies to childbirth education and doulas?

* Our curriculum supports the belief in access to midwifery and doula care  for all women. We encourage the midwifery, or physiological model, of care. We have launched a doula program to help more women gain access to quality doula care.

* As a childbirth education company, we believe providers, should keep and share statistics regarding their clients, particularly concerning interventions.

* Birth Boot Camp Instructors and Doulas are respectful and sensitive to beliefs, values, and customs of women and their families. We understand that we all come from different backgrounds and we honor that.

* Birth Boot Camp Instructors and Doulas understand the importance of freedom of movement in labor. Our classes, instructors, and doulas are trained in a wide variety of positions and movement that can be conducive to a better birth.

* Birth Boot Camp Instructors and Doulas support the family with community resources. An important part of their training is requiring them to have Mother-Friendly community resources ready to share with their clients.

* Birth Boot Camp supports evidence-based care. Our childbirth education classes cover common interventions and discuss the evidence for or against them. Our doulas are also well-versed in this area.

* As a childbirth education company, our focus is helping families achieve an amazing birth. In our childbirth classes, couples learn of a wide variety of techniques to help them throughout their labor — from relaxation to position change to partner support — that can be used before resorting to pharmaceutical pain relief medication.

* Families are encouraged to breastfeed. We have an extensive breastfeeding education by an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) available, and it is also included in our comprehensive 10-week class. Our doulas are trained by an IBCLC in early breastfeeding needs. We strongly support, encourage, and educate our families about the benefits of breastfeeding."
